An augmented reality application that offers an immersive experience for visitors, adding a fresh new way to engage with Jenny Holzer’s artwork and leaving an impactful impression on all who experienced it.

Project

Mobile application with 3 immersive AR experiences

Role

Lead Designer

1. The brief

The project involved collaborating with artist Jenny Holzer for an AR application at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Key requirements included developing an AR app with three immersive experiences featuring Holzer's iconic texts. The app needed to incorporate AR projection on various surfaces, including the museum's facade, and provide unique encounters with her LED signs at different locations around the Guggenheim museum.

2. The Solution

Within this project, the app was designed to offer three distinct augmented reality experiences, each with its own unique charm:

- The first experience unfolded within the Guggenheim's atrium, where LED signs magnificently displayed a carefully curated selection of Jenny Holzer's iconic texts. Through thoughtful visual design and innovative technological implementation, I aimed to bring these timeless messages to life, ensuring that users were immersed in the essence of Holzer's artistry.

- Venturing beyond the confines of the museum, the second experience awaited users in five different locations surrounding the Guggenheim. Here, virtual projections of Holzer's captivating artwork elegantly adorned the facades, creating a harmonious blend of physical and digital realities. As the lead designer, I meticulously crafted the visual elements, ensuring that the projections seamlessly integrated with the architectural nuances of each location, thereby delivering an awe-inspiring and immersive experience for users.

- However, the journey did not stop there. The remote experience, an integral part of the app, empowered users to place Jenny Holzer's profound texts anywhere in their surroundings. Through augmented reality, I enabled users to curate their own intimate encounters with the artist's work, fostering a deeply personal connection between the audience and the art. This facet of the application demanded meticulous attention to detail, as I strived to create an intuitive user interface and a seamless blending of the digital content with the physical environment.

3. My Role and Involvement

As the Project Lead, I initiated and led discussions with Jenny Holzer to understand her artistic vision and technical requirements. I translated these concepts into a comprehensive project brief, outlining deliverables and desired user experiences. Collaboration with AR developers was crucial to create wireframes and design elements. Throughout the project, my focus was on maintaining seamless communication between the artistic vision and technical implementation.

In terms of design, my responsibilities extended to developing wireframes illustrating the user journey and translating them into visual communication images. Leading the graphic design process for the AR application, I ensured alignment with Holzer's aesthetic. Collaborating with the content team, I seamlessly integrated Holzer's texts into the AR experience.

Regarding AR content and 3D designs, I oversaw the creation of AR content to ensure effective projection of Holzer's texts. Working on the 3D designs, I aimed to enhance the visual impact and maintain fidelity to Holzer's unique style. The goal was a seamless integration of technology and art, delivering a captivating experience for Guggenheim visitors.
