Louise Bourgeois XX

An Augmented Reality Application with 3 immersive experiences to be part of the LOUISE BOURGEOIS X JENNY HOLZER exhibition at the Kunstmuseum in Basel.

Project

Mobile application with 3 immersive AR experiences

Role

Lead Designer

1. The Brief

The project involved leading the development of an AR app for download at the Kunst Museum in Basel to enhance the Louise Bourgeois x Jenny Holzer exhibition. The three key experiences included: an activation triggered by scanning one of Louise Bourgeois' drawings, transporting users virtually inside the "Destruction of the Father" piece (an experience initially undefined, for which I conceptualized and created concepts); the projection of Louise Bourgeois' texts anywhere; and the creation of an Instagram filter projecting Bourgeois' texts onto users' faces.

2. The Solution

The AR app, conceived and executed under my guidance, delivered a transformative experience at the Kunst Museum in Basel:

Virtual Journey Inside "Destruction of the Father": The app, activated by scanning a Louise Bourgeois drawing at the museum, immersed users in a virtual exploration of "Destruction of the Father." This experience, initially undefined, required conceptualization and the creation of concepts. Animated shapes and changing moods provided a dynamic and engaging journey, enriching the understanding of the artwork.

Projection of Louise Bourgeois' Texts Anywhere: The app allowed users to project Louise Bourgeois' texts onto various surfaces within the museum, extending the exhibition's impact beyond physical artworks. This experience offered a unique and interactive way for visitors to engage with Bourgeois' written expressions.

Instagram Filter with Bourgeois' Texts: The innovative use of AR extended to social media platforms, where an Instagram filter projected Louise Bourgeois' texts onto users' faces. This interactive feature brought the exhibition into the digital realm, fostering broader engagement and sharing.

3. My Role and Involvement

As the project lead and designer, I played a central role in conceptualising and executing these three immersive experiences:

Conceptualisation and Planning: Led discussions with the Kunst Museum and Jenny Holzer to ideate each AR experience, especially the undefined virtual journey inside "Destruction of the Father," where I created concepts to shape the immersive encounter.

Design and Development Oversight: Worked closely with the development team to bring the virtual journey inside "Destruction of the Father" to life, overseeing the creation of animated shapes and mood transitions.

User Experience Design: Led the UX design process for all three experiences, ensuring an intuitive and captivating journey for museum visitors and app users.

Content Curation and Integration: Collaborated with Jenny Holzer to curate texts for projection, ensuring they seamlessly integrated into the physical and digital spaces of the exhibition.

Technical Implementation: Ensured the successful implementation of all three experiences, providing a cohesive and integrated AR app that elevated the Louise Bourgeois x Jenny Holzer exhibition at the Kunst Museum in Basel.
